Prior to undergoing any surgical procedures, there are some non-operative, conservative options for treating your hip pain that may be considered. They include the following:
- Physical Therapy. An exercise programme may be prescribed to strengthen the muscles in the hip joint and in many cases improve positioning of the hip and relieve pain.
- Anti-Inflammatory Medications. Designed to decrease swelling in the joint, and provide temporary pain relief. Please note, however, that all medications have risks and should only be taken in consultation with your pharmacist and doctor.
- Complimentary Medicines. Dietary supplements may decrease the symptoms of hip arthritis. Although not all supplements have the same level of research supporting their use, there are reports of supplements having some effect. Speak to your doctor about available options, and what she or he would recommend for you. Please note, however, that all medications have risks and should only be taken under the direction of your doctor.
